The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, Most Rev. Philip Naameh, at the Presidency.
President Mahama said initial funding for the proposed university would be drawn from a $30 million grant pledged by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The planned regional hospital, he added, would serve as a teaching facility for the new university, which will include a Faculty of Medical Sciences to train doctors and allied health professionals.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), President Mahama emphasized that the government remains focused on equipping institutions to meet modern labor market demands.
Archbishop Naameh, who proposed both the name and location of the university, highlighted several educational and social challenges affecting northern Ghana and appealed for greater government intervention.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah from the Office of the President, and Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.
