The funeral of the late Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali, has been scheduled for December 6, 2025, at Chorkor Tea Garden, a suburb of Accra.
The 27-year-old Super Middleweight fighter’s untimely death shocked the Ghanaian boxing community after he passed away on Tuesday, September 23, at the Lekma Hospital in Teshie, just 11 days after his fight with Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena, where he was stopped in the eighth round. Reports suggest he suffered internal bleeding from injuries sustained during the bout.
In the wake of his passing, the National Sports Authority (NSA) temporarily suspended all boxing activities and initiated investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death. A 10-member interim management committee, chaired by former Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) President Samir Captan, was later established to reform the sport’s safety standards.
The committee has been tasked with enforcing stricter medical checks, anti-doping regulations, and insurance coverage for boxers, as well as implementing capacity-building programs to enhance safety and governance within Ghanaian boxing.
Bahubali’s death marks the second boxing-related tragedy in Ghana this year, following the April death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Aluwasegun, who collapsed in the ring at the same venue. Boxing activities have since resumed under enhanced safety guidelines.
Bahubali will be remembered for his passion, resilience, and contribution to Ghana’s vibrant boxing scene.
