Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah has written his name into Sudanese football history after steering the Jediane into the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Sudan secured qualification as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams following Morocco’s decisive win over Zambia, a result that mathematically confirmed their progression even before the final round of group matches.
The achievement represents a dramatic turnaround for the Jediane, who began the competition rooted at the bottom of their group before climbing to third place with a landmark victory.
That win was particularly historic, marking only Sudan’s second victory at the Africa Cup of Nations since 1970 and their first at the tournament since 2012.
Guided by the composed and experienced leadership of Kwesi Appiah, Sudan have displayed determination, tactical discipline, and renewed belief, making their AFCON 2025 campaign one of the nation’s most memorable in recent decades.
Appiah’s success further enhances his coaching résumé as he continues to break new ground with Sudan on the continental stage.
Although Sudan are yet to face Burkina Faso in their final group match on Wednesday, their place in the knockout phase is already assured, reducing pressure and boosting team morale.
With 14 teams now confirmed for the Round of 16 and only two slots remaining, Sudan join powerhouses such as Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Ivory Coast, standing proudly among Africa’s elite and daring to dream of further success.
