Kwabena Agyepong and the Restoration of Hope in the NPP
By Kofi Dokyi Apeatu-Ampaw
“I lost hope the day Kwabena Agyepong was sidelined.”
That simple statement, shared by a long-time member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), captures a sentiment quietly held by many at the grassroots. It speaks to a deeper sense of loss — not merely the political exit of an individual, but the fading of a spirit that once defined the NPP: loyalty, service, and principled leadership.

The sidelining of Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong as General Secretary several years ago remains, for many, a moment that symbolised a moral departure in the party’s internal life. His removal, though political in nature, became emblematic of a broader disconnection between the party’s leadership and its base.
Kwabena Agyepong’s public service record reflects consistency, dedication, and an uncommon respect for the rule of law. From his years as Press Secretary to President John Agyekum Kufuor to his tenure as General Secretary, he has embodied the ideals of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition — honesty, meritocracy, and accountability. His treatment, and the lingering resentment it generated, exposed the widening gulf between those ideals and the realities of internal party politics.
As the NPP prepares for the next phase of its political journey, the call for renewal cannot be ignored. The party must reconnect with the men and women who form its foundation — the polling station executives, the electoral area coordinators, and the countless volunteers who keep its engine running.
Kwabena Agyepong’s re-emergence is, therefore, more than a personal bid for leadership; it represents a moral reawakening. His message of service and discipline resonates with those who still believe that politics can be a vehicle for honourable service.

If the NPP is to inspire the nation once again, it must first restore faith within its own ranks. The restoration of hope at the grassroots is not merely a political necessity; it is a moral imperative. In that sense, a vote for Kwabena Agyepong could well be a vote for the revival of the NPP’s founding spirit.
