Athletic Bilbao captain Inaki Williams has been ruled out of Ghana’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers due to a leg injury.
The forward, who was named in Ghana’s 24-man squad for the October fixtures, will miss matches against the Central African Republic on Wednesday at 16:00 GMT and Comoros on Sunday, October 12 at 19:00 GMT.
Spanish outlet El Chiringuito TV reports that Williams suffered a muscle overload injury affecting the tensor fasciae latae in his left leg. The injury occurred during Athletic Bilbao’s 2-1 win over Mallorca in La Liga, where Williams scored but was forced off in the 53rd minute.
Athletic Bilbao later confirmed his injury in an official statement:
“The captain will not join up with the Ghana national team and will begin his recovery at the Lezama training ground. Further tests are pending.”
Williams has been a key figure for Ghana since making his debut in 2022 and featured for the Black Stars at the FIFA World Cup that same year. Ghana remains in a strong position in the qualification campaign, and the team will be hoping for his swift return as they push for a spot in the 2026 tournament.
