The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a structured four-week roadmap designed to resolve the breakdown of Ghana’s electronic healthcare management system. The plan was outlined in Accra on Wednesday during a session of the Government Accountability Series.

According to the Minister, a new digital platform — the Ghana Healthcare Information Management System (GHIMS) — has been procured and will be rolled out across health facilities nationwide within a month. The rollout will proceed in phases:

  • Week 1: Teaching hospitals, regional hospitals and larger district hospitals
  • Week 2: Remaining district hospitals
  • Week 3: Clinics, health centres and CHPS compounds
  • Week 4: Full oversight and stabilisation of the system

Mr Akandoh emphasised that the country will no longer revert to manual patient record-keeping, stating:

“The medical records of Ghanaians would never go back to the manual way. We are moving forward, responsibly, confidently, and decisively.”

He further noted that the previous system’s breakdown had caused delays in patient registrations, claims processing and record-keeping—particularly in regions like Ashanti—forcing many health facilities to adopt “cash-and-carry” modes temporarily.

The Minister stressed that the new digital architecture would ensure continuity of care, improved service delivery and accountability across the health sector.
