The government has announced plans to allocate GHC1 billion from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to phase out the double-track system in Senior High Schools across the country.

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made the announcement on Thursday, September 11, during the commissioning of a newly completed staff accommodation facility at Accra Girls’ Senior High School.

Mr. Iddrisu stated that the allocation will be included in the 2026 national budget as part of a broader strategy to address the infrastructure deficits that necessitated the implementation of the double-track system.

“We are committed to ending the double-track system as part of our efforts to improve the quality of Senior High School education,” he said.

He further revealed that President John Mahama has directed Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson to ensure the GHC1 billion allocation is incorporated into the 2026 GETFund formula.

“This dedicated funding will support the transition process and help overcome the challenges associated with ending the double-track system,” the Minister added.

The double-track system was introduced in 2018 to manage overcrowding in SHSs following the rollout of the Free SHS policy. However, it has faced criticism for disrupting academic calendars and placing pressure on school infrastructure and staff.
