Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed government’s commitment to equipping the Ghana Navy to effectively protect the country’s maritime domain and support the development of the national Blue Economy agenda.

Speaking at the 11th Ghana Navy Memorial Day parade held at the Western Naval Command in Sekondi, the Vice President praised the Navy’s continued excellence in maritime security and paid tribute to fallen naval personnel, whose sacrifices she described as foundational to Ghana’s national security.

“Government has been made aware of the constraints facing the Navy, including insufficient platforms and other essential facilities,” she said. “We are exploring every avenue to better equip the Ghana Navy and will tackle the other challenges with the urgency they deserve.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the logistical and operational challenges confronting the Navy, including outdated infrastructure, and assured personnel of swift and deliberate interventions to enhance naval readiness.

She also encouraged naval officers to maintain their high standards of professionalism and to strengthen collaboration with other maritime stakeholders to protect Ghana’s territorial waters.

“I entreat you to continue to work hard in collaboration with other maritime stakeholders to improve maritime security and preserve our territorial integrity,” she urged.

The ceremony, which marked the 11th edition of Ghana Navy Memorial Day, served as a solemn moment to honour the dedication and bravery of naval personnel, while underscoring the crucial role of maritime security in national development—particularly within the context of Ghana’s Blue Economy initiative aimed at sustainably harnessing marine resources.
