The government has unveiled plans to roll out a new housing scheme for teachers, beginning with a GH¢500 million allocation to a revolving housing fund in 2026. An additional GH¢1 billion is expected to be committed in 2027 as the programme is expanded.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the initiative at the 54th Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra. He said the programme is aimed at addressing long-standing housing challenges faced by teachers across the country.
The President explained that the scheme will be implemented through a partnership involving the government, GNAT and Republic Bank. Under the arrangement, the initial GH¢500 million allocation, already captured in the 2026 Budget, will serve as seed capital for the revolving fund.
The housing model will allow teachers to gradually acquire their own homes by redirecting monthly rent payments toward ownership. Teachers will be able to apply for housing units, which will be constructed in selected districts based on land availability and teacher deployment needs.
President Mahama said the fund will be sustained through contributions from stakeholders, including GNAT, Republic Bank and participating teachers, allowing it to continuously finance new housing projects.
He added that government is engaging district assemblies nationwide to secure land for the housing developments, particularly in communities where teachers are posted.
The President assured delegates that the operational framework for the scheme will be completed within the year, with plans to scale up the initiative in subsequent years to reach more teachers and improve their overall welfare.
