GIS Officer Killed, Another Injured in Armed Attack at Gbintri Checkpoint

A Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer has been killed and another seriously injured following an armed attack at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, October 3, when unknown assailants opened fire on officers manning the checkpoint.

Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II), Rafiq Mohammed, was fatally shot and died on the spot. His colleague, AICO II Oppong Daniel, sustained gunshot wounds to the jaw and back and is currently receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.

Police investigators recovered AK-47 shell casings at the scene, along with a GIS-issued rifle bearing registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646.

A joint security team, led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, Gambaga Municipal Police Commander, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North East Regional Intelligence Officer for GIS, was quickly dispatched to secure the area and begin investigations.

Authorities have confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway to uncover the motive behind the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
