President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Vegetable Development Project under the Feed Ghana Initiative in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, describing it as a significant effort to boost national food security and expand irrigation infrastructure.
Speaking to farmers, traditional leaders, and project partners on Thursday, November 27, the President announced that the project includes the construction of a modern packhouse to handle grading, sorting, packaging, and cold-chain management for vegetables produced under the initiative.
President Mahama revealed that the project is designed to be completed within 12 months, adding that government plans to replicate the model across the country—particularly in northern regions where farmers face severe dry-season water shortages.
“The entire project has been carefully designed to be completed within 12 months. This Vegetable Development Project will be replicated in many other parts of the country, especially in the north, where water availability is a major challenge at many times of the year,” he said.
Highlighting its potential for job creation, the President noted that strengthening the vegetable sector will expand employment opportunities. He emphasized that government is laying the groundwork for a 24-hour agricultural economy capable of absorbing the growing labour force and advancing sustainable development.
