Consumers across Ghana will face higher utility charges beginning January 1, 2026, following the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) approval of new electricity and water tariffs under its 2026–2030 multi-year review.

Under the revised structure:

  • Electricity tariffs will rise by 9.86% across all customer categories.
  • Water tariffs will increase by 15.92% over the five-year period.

According to the PURC, the adjustments are necessary to support vital investments in utility infrastructure, enhance service quality, and ensure the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of the sector. The Commission emphasized that the tariff review also seeks to safeguard consumer interests.

The new framework introduces quarterly tariff adjustments to help manage fluctuations in exchange rates, inflation, fuel prices, and changes in the power generation mix—factors largely outside the control of utility providers.

In a bid to expand energy access to remote areas, the Commission has also approved mini-grid tariffs for island and underserved communities. The associated costs will be absorbed into the Volta River Authority’s (VRA) revenue requirements.

PURC noted that the decision followed extensive stakeholder engagements, public consultations, and a rigorous evaluation of proposals submitted by utility companies. The Commission further assured consumers that it will intensify oversight of service providers to ensure efficiency, value for money, and compliance with regulatory standards under the new tariff regime.
