The killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, popularly known as El Mencho, has sparked a wave of violent reprisals across Mexico, plunging several regions into fear and lockdowns.

El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was fatally wounded during a Mexican special forces operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, on Sunday, February 22, 2026, and died while being airlifted to Mexico City.Following his death, gunmen launched coordinated attacks in at least 20 states, including Jalisco, Colima, and Tamaulipas.

More than 250 roadblocks were set up, dozens of vehicles were torched, and at least 25 National Guard members were reportedly killed. Total casualties from the raid and retaliatory violence are estimated at over 60.Airports in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta experienced temporary closures, schools were shut in several states, and residents were advised to shelter indoors.

The U.S. Embassy, along with Canada and China, issued security alerts for their citizens.
