Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections after securing a decisive victory in the party’s presidential primary held on 31 January 2026.
According to official results from the Electoral Commission, Dr Bawumia, a former Vice-President of Ghana, polled 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid ballots cast across more than 300 polling centres nationwide. His win ensures he will lead the NPP’s campaign to reclaim the presidency in 2028.
His closest challenger, businessman and ex-MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, came second with 46,554 votes (23.76 per cent), while Dr Bryan Acheampong followed with 36,303 votes (18.53 per cent). The other candidates, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, trailed with smaller vote counts.
The primary was described as largely peaceful and well-organised, with no major security incidents reported. Delegates from all 16 regions participated in the exercise, reflecting a broad internal democratic process within the party.
In the aftermath of the result, the NPP officially congratulated Dr Bawumia on his victory and rallied the party behind his leadership ahead of the 2028 contest. Party officials expressed confidence in his ability to spearhead a comeback after the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Political figures and party supporters have also weighed in, with some calling for unity, discipline and a collective effort to rebuild and strengthen party structures nationwide.
Dr Bawumia’s election marks his second time winning the NPP’s presidential primary; he previously led the party’s ticket in the 2024 elections.
