The Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has called on the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) to adopt innovative strategies and fully utilise airport lands and facilities to increase revenue generation.
Speaking during a familiarisation tour of GACL and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on Thursday, she encouraged management to look beyond traditional aircraft operations and explore commercial opportunities within airport enclaves.
According to her, maximising the commercial potential of airport spaces would not only boost revenue but also create employment opportunities and support the government’s 24-hour economy and national reset agenda.
“I am here to encourage you to be more innovative and look beyond just aircraft operations and fully utilise our airport land and facilities for commercial purposes,” she stated.
The visit formed part of her efforts to better understand the operations of agencies under the Ministry, assess ongoing work, and identify challenges affecting performance.
Madam Affo-Toffey reaffirmed the government’s vision of positioning Ghana as a leading aviation hub in West Africa, with Kotoka International Airport (KIA) becoming the preferred destination for travellers in the sub-region.
She assured the agencies of continued ministerial support for expanding and upgrading airport infrastructure across the country to enhance trade, tourism, and the efficient movement of people and goods.
During the tour, the Deputy Minister inspected ongoing projects, including the redevelopment of Terminal Two, runway expansion and overlay works, and the construction of a new ultra-modern head office complex.
The Terminal Two redevelopment, scheduled for completion by mid-2027, will handle both domestic and selected international flights to reduce congestion at Terminal Three. The upgraded facility will feature two levels, retail outlets, restaurants, lift access, and improved connectivity to the departure hall to enhance passenger experience.
The runway expansion and overlay project, which began in July 2025, is expected to be completed by July 2027.
Madam Affo-Toffey commended Amandi Construction Limited, the contractor overseeing the projects, for the progress made so far and pledged to conduct regular follow-up visits to ensure timelines are met.
She further noted that the Ministry places strong emphasis on renewable energy, adding that future airport infrastructure projects would incorporate solar energy solutions.
Expressing appreciation for the warm reception, she said she looked forward to returning to witness the successful completion of the projects.
Managing Director of GACL, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, explained that the company was separated from the GCAA in 2007 and mandated to manage and operate six airports nationwide. The state-owned company has expanded its workforce from about 400 employees to approximately 1,600, with over 1,000 staff based in Accra.
She indicated that the new head office complex had become necessary as the company had outgrown its existing office space nearly two decades after its establishment. Mrs. Opare expressed confidence that the completion of the ongoing projects, particularly the Terminal Two redevelopment, would significantly improve operational efficiency and passenger experience at the airport.
