An Accra Circuit Court has brought a couple to trial for allegedly defrauding a public servant of GH¢36,000 by falsely claiming they would rent out an apartment.

The Allegations

The accused, Salomey Vedomey, a trader, and Nana Obeng Tandoh, a businessman, allegedly collected the money on July 7, 2025. They were accused of offering their chamber and hall apartment located in Dzorwulu, Accra, for rent.

The couple faces charges of conspiracy to commit crime and defrauding by false pretences. Both pleaded not guilty when they appeared before the court, presided over by Mrs. Susana Eduful.

Bail and Court Directives

The court granted each accused person bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties. The sureties must be justified, requiring the deposit of title deed documents with the court registry.

The prosecution was ordered to file disclosures, and the case has been adjourned to December 2, 2025, for the Case Management Conference.

Details of the Alleged Fraud

The complainant, a public servant residing in Dansoman, was introduced to Salomey by an agent at the Dzorwulu apartment. Salomey claimed to own the property with her husband and offered it for rent at GH¢1,500 per month, requesting a two-year advance (totaling GH¢36,000). She also promised that minor works on the property would be completed within two weeks.

On the day the money was paid, the complainant and her father met the couple, where Salomey introduced Tandoh as her husband. The couple sat in the complainant’s car, received the GH¢36,000, and issued a receipt signed by Tandoh.

Two weeks later, when the complainant was supposed to move in, Salomey allegedly began making excuses. She later claimed that Tandoh had absconded with the money. A police report was subsequently filed, leading to the couple’s arrest.

While Salomey denied the offence, Tandoh reportedly admitted to it. Furthermore, investigations revealed that the couple had allegedly collected money from multiple individuals for the same apartment.
