The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has announced that it is on schedule to submit its draft report on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution to President John Dramani Mahama by the end of September or early October.

In an interview, CRC Secretary Dr. Rainer Akumperigya said:

“We are working hard to finalise the draft report, and we expect to present it to the President by the end of September or early October.”

The report is the result of months of nationwide consultations with major stakeholders, including the Council of State and the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Key proposals discussed during the review process include:

  • Imposing limits on presidential terms
  • Reducing the powers of the executive
  • Electing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs)
  • Amending the rule that requires ministers to be appointed from Parliament

Dr. Akumperigya emphasized that the submission of the draft would not conclude the committee’s role, as members would continue to engage Parliament and assist with the implementation process as needed.
