The Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, has demanded the removal of Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, accusing him of ineffective leadership in tackling persistent problems in the nation’s transport sector.

Mr. Agboado said worsening transport conditions in Accra and other major cities—where commuters are often stranded during peak hours and forced to pay unapproved fares—reflect a failure by the Transport Ministry to address core issues.

He criticised the Minister for inadequate stakeholder engagement, arguing that the lack of consultation with transport unions and operators has exacerbated operational difficulties. “If I have to speak frankly, the Minister of Transport should not be at post again. The Transport Minister must go,” he said, insisting that Mr. Nikpe’s continued leadership is untenable.

Mr. Agboado also questioned responses from the ministry to transport shortages last year, including assurances that State Transport Company (STC) buses would be deployed to ease commuter hardships—measures he said have yet to materialise.

He further criticised the minister’s focus on legislative priorities such as the Okada Bill, which regulates commercial motorcycle operations, arguing that it detracts from broader efforts needed to improve overall transport systems.

However, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has distanced itself from calls to remove the minister, clarifying that Mr. Agboado’s comments do not represent the union’s official stance, despite shared concerns about the sector’s challenges.
