The Article 146 Committee of Inquiry investigating petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has revealed that it reviewed close to 10,000 pages of documentary evidence during its proceedings.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Monday, September 1, 2025, the Committee Chairperson, Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, confirmed that three separate petitions had been referred to the committee in March—all seeking the removal of the Chief Justice. He clarified that although the petitions sought similar outcomes, each would be assessed independently on its own merit.

Providing details on the first petition, filed by Mr. Daniel Ofori, Justice Pwamang said the committee heard from 13 witnesses presented by the petitioner. Chief Justice Torkornoo mounted a defence by calling 12 witnesses, including subject-matter experts, and personally testified under cross-examination.

Each legal team comprised four lawyers, and the committee meticulously examined nearly 10,000 pages of documentary material related to the case.

The committee has since submitted its report on the first petition to President John Dramani Mahama, who previously determined that a prima facie case had been established based on the three petitions submitted.

In accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, the President established a five-member committee to conduct the formal inquiry. The panel was chaired by Justice Pwamang, with members including former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, an Associate Professor at the University of Ghana.
