Boy Killed, Property Destroyed in Shooting at Adelekezu Mining Site

A violent confrontation at a mining site in Adelekezu, near Dadwen in the Axim District, has resulted in the death of a young boy and the destruction of property, following a dispute between local youths and private security personnel.

The incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, according to the Western Regional Police Command. Police reports indicate that tensions escalated after an argument broke out between some youths in the area and security staff at the mining site.

During the confrontation, the youths allegedly attempted to seize a pump-action firearm from one of the security officers. In the ensuing struggle, the officer discharged the weapon, fatally wounding the boy. The victim was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the shooting, angry youths vandalised the mining site, setting two 4×4 SUVs and two tipper trucks ablaze. A pickup truck and a Toyota Land Cruiser were also damaged. Police intervened to restore order and safely rescued 11 workers who were trapped at the site during the unrest.

In connection with the incident, police have arrested five suspects: Gyenyame Owusu (38), Matthew Asamah (24), Nana Yaw (15), Yaw Opoku (16), and Kojo Agyei (21). They are being investigated for offences including causing harm and the unlawful destruction of property.

The Western Regional Police Command has appealed to residents of Adelekezu and surrounding communities to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations, assuring the public that appropriate action will be taken to ensure justice is served.
