Former Majority Leader and senior advisor to the Bawumia Campaign, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has strongly defended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s eligibility to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, describing him as a man of “impeccable character.”

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu cited Article 13, Clause 7 of the NPP constitution, which spells out the criteria for any party member seeking to become the party’s presidential candidate.

“The constitution clearly states that any aspirant must have been active in the party for a minimum of five years. Dr. Bawumia, in my view, fully satisfies this requirement,” he said.

Leadership and Integrity

Beyond eligibility, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the importance of personal integrity in leadership, noting that the NPP constitution rightly demands its presidential candidate be of good character.

“We’re not just selecting a flagbearer — we are choosing a presidential candidate. That person must be of good character, and Bawumia unquestionably meets that standard,” he stated.

He added that the call for integrity isn’t just symbolic, but reflects the weight of the office and the role of a leader in shaping the nation’s values.

“Leadership carries responsibility. Our presidential candidate becomes a reflection of the party and a model for the country. That’s why character matters,” he explained.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s remarks come amid internal discussions within the NPP over the path forward as the party prepares for the 2028 elections following the end of President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
