A 45-year-old man, identified as Issah Nawutou Baricle, has been shot and killed by a police officer near Gbintri in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.
The incident reportedly occurred around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at a police checkpoint in Gagbini, along the Gushegu–Gbintri road.
The deceased was riding as a passenger on a motorbike when the confrontation broke out. The dispute allegedly began after a police officer demanded a bribe from the riders.
“He was coming with his brother when the police stopped them to extort money,” one eyewitness said. “The officer asked for GH¢10, but the man said he had only GH¢5 and pleaded with him to consider the poor condition of the road and the hardship people were facing.”
The witness continued that the exchange quickly escalated. “The argument became heated, and the officer drew his weapon. When the man tried to flee, the officer chased him and shot him in a nearby farmland.”
The victim was rushed to the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, where doctors pronounced him dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an enraged mob reportedly stormed and vandalised the police checkpoint, destroying structures and property in protest of the killing.
Security has since been tightened in the area as investigations continue into the incident.
