The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has demolished two unauthorised structures being used as an auto-mechanic workshop behind the Awudome Cemetery, near the SSNIT Pension House, as part of renewed efforts to clamp down on encroachment on public land. The Assembly has also reiterated its warning to traders and roadside operators ahead of a planned decongestion exercise in February 2026.

The demolition was carried out by an AMA task force following earlier directives issued under the leadership of Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, instructing occupants to vacate government-reserved land. Although warning notices had been clearly displayed at the site, they were reportedly ignored.

During the operation, officials also confiscated a weighing scale belonging to scrap dealers who had turned a plot of land in front of a Catholic Church near the Awudome Roundabout into a scrap collection centre. In addition, renovation works on a nearby shop were halted after the owners failed to produce the required permits.

Speaking to the media, AMA Coordinating Director Douglas N. K. Annoful said the Assembly remains committed to protecting public lands and enforcing city regulations.

“We will continue this enforcement campaign and apply sanctions against individuals who encroach on reserved lands, obstruct roads or put up structures without the necessary approvals,” he said.

Mr Annoful urged persons who have erected or are developing structures in unauthorised locations to remove them immediately to avoid sanctions. He further reminded traders and roadside operators to stay off the streets from February 1, 2026, as the AMA, in collaboration with partner assemblies, begins clearing unauthorised activities from major roads and public spaces across the capital.
