The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) has announced an immediate two-month suspension of all burials at the Osu Cemetery in Accra.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Alfred Ato Allotey-Gaisie, cited grave concerns over criminal activities at the site, including illegal exhumations and the desecration of human remains, unauthorized sale of burial plots to grieving families and grave robberies as well as unethical burial practices.

He said the suspension applies to the general public, but burials for indigenous persons may proceed under strictly controlled and monitored procedures.

According to him, the Assembly is conducting a comprehensive audit of burial permits, payments, and documentation to identify procedural breaches and trace affected families.

He said additional security personnel have been deployed to prevent further unauthorized access and vandalism.

He revealed that at least two individuals were arrested on February 8, 2026, for illegal grave digging and were handed over to the Osu Police Station with the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit being tasked with intensifying oversight to restore order and protect the dignity of the deceased.
