Voters in the Akwatia Constituency in Ghana’s Eastern Region are casting their ballots today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of the incumbent MP, Ernest Kumi.

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to participate in this closely watched by-election, which has become a key battleground between the nation’s two main political parties.

Representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has put forward Solomon Kwame Asumadu. Both candidates have mounted energetic campaigns in recent weeks, with top party officials and national figures visiting the constituency to rally support.

To maintain peace and order, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers throughout the constituency. Authorities have issued strong warnings against any acts of violence, voter intimidation, or breaches of electoral laws, vowing swift action against any offenders.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has also pledged a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process. Measures have been put in place to ensure timely distribution of materials, robust monitoring, and quick collation of results.

Today’s by-election is drawing nationwide attention and is widely seen as a bellwether for the 2028 general elections. Political analysts say the outcome could offer early insight into voter sentiment and the relative strength of the NDC and NPP heading into the national race.
