The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the Electoral Commission (EC) and residents of the Akwatia Constituency that the Ghana Police Service is fully prepared to ensure a peaceful and secure by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Dr. Yohuno gave the assurance on Monday during a visit to the Collation Centre in Akwatia. While inspecting the facilities, he engaged with the EC’s National Director of Training, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, and the Eastern Regional EC Director, John Appiah Baffoe.

“We are all with you, and it will be fine. We’re strong on the ground, we’re fully prepared. And we will give you the support,” the IGP stated confidently.

The by-election was necessitated by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi.

As voters prepare to head to the polls, two independent opinion polls have placed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Baidoo Bediako, slightly ahead of his main opponent, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A survey by Sanity Africa, conducted between August 1 and 27, shows Bediako leading with 52.3% of voter support, compared to 47.7% for Asumadu — a narrow margin of 4.6 percentage points.

Another poll by Global Info Analytics echoes a similar trend, projecting 53% support for Bediako versus 47% for his NPP rival, suggesting a competitive race with a slight edge for the NDC.

The police service’s preparedness and the tight polling numbers have heightened national interest in the outcome, which many see as an early indicator of political momentum ahead of the 2028 general elections.
