The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has instructed the Pharmacy Council to overhaul the criteria for granting pharmacy licenses as part of Ghana’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

In a statement released by the Ministry of Health on Thursday, January 15, Mr. Akandoh, speaking at a two-day Expanded Stakeholders Retreat, said the previous licensing system—which focused on the proximity of pharmacies to one another—no longer meets the nation’s healthcare needs.

He emphasized that future licensing should consider population size to ensure equitable access to medicines, particularly in underserved areas. The new approach is expected to improve the nationwide distribution of pharmacies and support Ghana’s goal of providing accessible healthcare for all.
