Police in the Ashanti Region say they have neutralised three suspected armed robbers in an operation aimed at stopping a planned highway robbery along the Anwiankwanta–Obuasi Highway.
According to a police statement issued on Monday, December 29, 2025, the suspects—identified as Seidu Issah, Musah Yakubu, and Yahaya Munkaila, also known as Tijani—were shot on December 24, 2025, after officers intercepted them in a bushy area between Anwiankwanta and the Jacobu junction.
The police said officers encountered the suspects as they were preparing for the robbery and came under gunfire. The officers returned fire, killing the three suspects, while two others managed to flee the scene.
Items retrieved during the operation included two pump-action guns loaded with ammunition, an unregistered pistol, 25 live cartridges, and six spent cartridges.
The suspects were taken to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police believe the group was responsible for a number of violent robberies in the region, including the Jacobu airport robbery on November 3, 2025, which resulted in the death of a security guard. They are also suspected to have carried out multiple highway robberies along the Manso stretch, the Antoakrom robbery, the Abofour Forest robbery near Offinso, and the attack on a gold buyer at Anwiankwanta on December 8, 2025.
In a follow-up operation on December 26, 2025, police searched a palm plantation near Manso Nkwanta, believed to be a hideout for the gang. During the search, officers recovered an AK-47 assault rifle, an MG3 rifle, a pump-action gun, a single-barrel gun, ammunition, and other personal items.
Police say investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the weapons and to apprehend other accomplices who remain at large.
