The Education Ministry has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to suspend the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu issued the directive after an investigation by JoyNews and investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni brought the alleged incident at the school in the Ashanti Region to public attention.

In a statement dated Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the ministry described the allegations as serious and said Abdulai should be suspended while a full investigation is conducted.

“The Honourable Minister considers the issue serious and has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to take effective immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster, Mr Zakaria Abdulai, pending full investigations into the matter,” the statement said.

The ministry also disclosed that Iddrisu had asked the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service to begin investigations into the allegations.

The investigations are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incident and determine the appropriate next steps.

Reaffirming its position on the matter, the Ministry of Education and the GES said they would not tolerate such alleged conduct in schools or other educational institutions across the country.

“The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service reiterate that we would not tolerate or countenance such alleged despicable misconduct in any educational institution across the country,” the statement added.

The ministry also stressed the duty of teachers and school authorities to protect students placed in their care by parents and guardians.

“Parents and Guardians have entrusted their wards in the care of teachers whose responsibilities are to protect and safeguard the children and not abuse them,” it stated.

The directive comes as the relevant authorities prepare to investigate the allegations. The claims against Abdulai have not yet been established, and the outcome of the investigations will be crucial in determining the facts of the case.
