The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says it will take legal action against two individuals accused of helping Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah evade arrest.
The development follows an attempted arrest of the lawmaker on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation by the anti-corruption and economic crimes agency.
In a statement, EOCO said the two individuals were captured in a video circulating on social media actively intervening during the operation. The agency said their conduct is being assessed and that appropriate legal steps would be taken if they are found to have facilitated the MP’s escape.
EOCO explained that its officers were carrying out their statutory duties when they attempted to arrest Baffour Awuah.
According to the agency, the MP had previously been invited twice in February 2026 to assist with investigations but failed to honour both invitations.
The attempted arrest on Wednesday was therefore part of measures taken by EOCO to secure his attendance and continue its investigation.
The operation was, however, called off after the situation escalated.
EOCO said its officers disengaged to prevent the confrontation from posing a risk to public safety.
Following the incident, Baffour Awuah reportedly went to Parliament to seek sanctuary, although the House is currently on recess.
The incident has raised questions about the relationship between parliamentary privileges and criminal investigations involving lawmakers.
EOCO said it respects the privileges and immunities guaranteed to Members of Parliament but stressed that parliamentary membership does not place anyone above the law or automatically bring an investigation to an end.
The agency said its investigation remains active and that video footage from the incident is being reviewed as part of efforts to determine the appropriate next steps.
EOCO assured the public that any further action would be taken in accordance with the law and the principles of due process.
