The seizure of a massive cocaine shipment linked to Ghana has triggered calls for a thorough investigation, with Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu warning that the case could damage the country’s hard-earned international reputation.
Dr Sosu, a Member of Parliament for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said the reported seizure by French authorities must be investigated fully and anyone found responsible must face the law.
In a Facebook post on September 14, 2026, the legislator said Ghana’s growing reputation on the international stage should not be undermined by individuals seeking to enrich themselves illegally.
He credited President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government, as well as Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, with efforts to project Ghana as a country committed to diplomacy, integrity and democratic values.
Dr Sosu warned that failing to identify those behind the cocaine shipment could put Ghana’s international standing at risk.
“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and the NDC Government have done commendably well in positioning Ghana as a respected global leader in diplomacy,” he said, adding that the country’s reputation must not be damaged by the actions of a few individuals.
He therefore called for the reported seizure of the cocaine consignment, valued at approximately $260 million, to be thoroughly investigated and for anyone found culpable to be brought to book.
“Ghana’s international reputation is a national asset. It must be protected through transparency, accountability and the uncompromising enforcement of the law,” Dr Sosu added.
Details of the cocaine seizure
According to a Reuters report, French customs officers seized nearly 3.9 metric tonnes of cocaine with an estimated street value of €225 million, equivalent to about $261.45 million.
The drugs were discovered at the northern French port of Dunkirk on Thursday, September 10, 2026, according to France’s organised crime prosecutor’s office.
The cocaine was concealed inside a container carrying plastic waste that had arrived from Ghana. The shipment was reportedly destined, at least in part, for Antwerp in Belgium.
French authorities have since destroyed the seized drugs and opened an investigation into the case.
The report also indicated that France’s judicial police had been monitoring the criminal network allegedly linked to the shipment before the cocaine was intercepted.
For Dr Sosu, the case presents an opportunity for Ghanaian authorities to demonstrate transparency and accountability by identifying anyone connected to the shipment and ensuring that those found culpable face the appropriate legal action.
He maintained that protecting Ghana’s international reputation requires firm action whenever individuals attempt to exploit the country’s name for criminal activity.
