Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Mohammed Yakubu, has come under intense criticism after a video emerged showing him telling an underage schoolgirl he would marry her during a visit by pupils to Parliament.
The 50-second video, shared by Ghanaian broadcaster Israel Laryea on Friday, July 31, 2026, captures the MP interacting with a group of schoolchildren while encouraging them to work hard and pursue their ambitions.
Addressing the pupils, Yakubu reflected on his childhood dream of becoming a Member of Parliament, saying he was once inspired after visiting Parliament as a student.
“I’m an MP in Ashanti Region. I just want to encourage you all. I used to come here when I was schooling. I would see the MPs and be happy for them. I had a dream, and today, standing here as an MP is one of the dreams that I’ve worked for,” he said.
The interaction, however, took a controversial turn when the lawmaker invited one of the female pupils to identify herself.
After the girl mentioned her name, Yakubu complimented her appearance before making a remark that has since drawn widespread criticism.
“You’re very beautiful. When you grow up, I’ll marry you, so she’s my wife. In future, she will also be an MP, and all of you will be somebody in the future. I wish you the best,” he said.
The video has since gone viral on social media, with many Ghanaians condemning the comments as inappropriate because they were directed at a minor.
Several users argued that public officials, particularly lawmakers, should exercise greater caution when interacting with children and avoid remarks that could be interpreted as inappropriate.
Others have called for Parliament and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and consider disciplinary action against the MP.
The incident has triggered a broader conversation online about the conduct expected of public office holders when engaging with children in official settings.
