Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has deployed a special team of experienced investigators and intelligence officers to the Central Region to support ongoing investigations into the death of a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on June 15, 2026, the deployment is aimed at strengthening ongoing police operations and ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The deployment forms part of the broader operational response by the Ghana Police Service to ensure a thorough and coordinated investigative process in the region.
“The team is expected to work closely with regional command structures to strengthen fact-finding efforts and provide additional technical and intelligence support on the ground,” the statement noted.
The Police Service assured the family of the deceased, the university community, and the general public of its commitment to conducting a professional, transparent, and diligent investigation.
The development follows the death of 20-year-old UCC student Innocentia Avinu, who was found dead at a beach in the Central Region after being reported missing.
According to reports, Innocentia, a Level 200 student, was last seen on June 11, 2026, at the Ayensu Plaza Hostel on the university campus. She was reportedly wearing a black dress at the time of her disappearance.

Her family subsequently launched a search and appealed to the public for information regarding her whereabouts. The search ended in tragedy when her body was discovered on June 12, 2026, at Hatchland Beach Resort near the university.
Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Central Regional Police Public Affairs Unit confirmed the incident.
He explained that on June 13, 2026, a relative identified a photograph of the deceased at a police station.
“The Dean of Students was informed, and together with the police and family members, they proceeded to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary, where the body was shown to the family and confirmed to be that of Innocentia Avinu.
“The body was carefully inspected in the presence of family members, and there were no physical marks on it. The regional crime scene team visited and processed the scene. Meanwhile, the body is awaiting autopsy. The case is still under investigation,” Chief Inspector Ettie stated.
The Police Service says the special investigative team will work closely with officers in the region to establish the full circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work while assuring all stakeholders that every effort is being made to uncover the facts of the case.
