One person has been confirmed dead following the collapse of a building at the North Industrial Area in Accra in the early hours of Sunday, June 7, 2026.
The incident occurred at about 4:25 a.m., triggering a major emergency response involving the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to reports, rescue teams worked through heaps of concrete and twisted metal in a race to locate and rescue individuals believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who visited the scene, confirmed that one person had lost their life in the collapse, while search and rescue operations were still ongoing.
Earlier, rescue personnel successfully pulled one survivor from the debris and transported the individual to a medical facility for treatment.
Eyewitnesses said they were awakened by a loud crashing sound shortly before dawn, prompting residents and nearby workers to rush to the scene. Some community members reportedly joined initial rescue efforts before emergency responders took control of the operation.
Firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and the GNFS Headquarters have been leading the rescue mission, using specialised equipment to search for survivors, while heavy-duty machinery continues to clear debris and create access routes.
Authorities have cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure amid concerns that sections of the remaining structure could collapse and pose additional risks to rescue workers and nearby residents.
The latest tragedy comes just days after another fatal building collapse in Adenta, renewing concerns about structural integrity, enforcement of building regulations, and safety compliance in the capital.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and investigations are expected to commence after rescue operations are completed.
