The United States has launched fresh military strikes against Iranian targets, raising fears of a renewed escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes targeted military facilities on Qeshm Island near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. They were carried out in what it described as a “self-defense” operation following Iranian missile and drone attacks in the Gulf.
The US military said it struck an Iranian military ground control station and intercepted several ballistic missiles and drones launched by Iran toward regional targets, including Bahrain and Kuwait. CENTCOM indicated that some missiles failed to reach their targets while others were intercepted by allied air defense systems.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed carrying out retaliatory missile and drone attacks, claiming they were launched in response to US actions near the Strait of Hormuz and on Qeshm Island. The IRGC warned that any further attacks on Iran would trigger a stronger response.
The latest exchange comes amid growing instability around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. The US has also intensified enforcement of its naval blockade on vessels heading to Iranian ports, including disabling ships accused of violating the restrictions.
The renewed hostilities have raised concerns about the future of ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two countries. While US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said negotiations remain possible, reports indicate that peace talks have come under increasing strain following the latest military actions.
The developments mark one of the most serious flare-ups between the US and Iran in recent weeks and have heightened concerns about security, global oil supplies, and stability across the Middle East.
