Former UK ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, was arrested Monday by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of misconduct in public office, linked to allegations he shared sensitive information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as UK business secretary.
Mandelson, 72, was later released on bail. His lawyers say the arrest was prompted by unfounded claims he might leave the country. He had resigned from the Labour Party and the House of Lords earlier this month following earlier Epstein-related revelations.
The case has intensified scrutiny of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with calls for transparency regarding Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador.
The charge of misconduct in public office involves serious, willful abuse of power or neglect in a public role.
