President John Dramani Mahama says the significant drop in Ghana’s 2025 WASSCE performance is the result of years of neglect at the basic education level.
Speaking at the launch of the STEMBox initiative for primary schools, he said the poor outcomes reflect long-standing gaps in foundational learning, worsened by delayed capitation grants and persistent challenges with teacher quality.
Mahama warned that students without strong foundational skills are simply “moved along a conveyor belt,” only to struggle at higher levels of education. He described the situation as alarming for government, parents, and the wider public.
The President has directed the Minister of Education to thoroughly review the examiners’ report to identify the underlying reasons for the sharp decline, noting that the same teachers and conditions existed in previous successful years.
“It is baffling that under the same circumstances, one cohort performs so poorly. We must understand what went wrong,” he stressed.
