Cadman Atta Mills, brother of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, has issued a strong appeal to government, urging swift and decisive action to end illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which he says continues to devastate lives, communities, and the environment.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Mills criticised what he sees as the government’s complacency, warning that the severe consequences of galamsey cannot be overshadowed by recent economic achievements — including the Cedi’s recovery.

“I refuse to pay for the accolades President Mahama and the NDC are receiving for the Cedi’s recovery with my health or life,” he stated.

He further argued that whether it is outright illegal mining or politically backed small-scale mining operations, the impact is the same: environmental degradation, poisoned water sources, and growing health hazards for local populations.

“It is killing us,” Mills lamented, citing the destruction of farmlands, the pollution of major rivers, and the long-term risks to public health.

Calling for urgent intervention, he appealed directly to President John Mahama, urging him to prioritize environmental protection and take firm action to end galamsey before the damage becomes irreversible.

“This is not just about the economy. It’s about survival and the kind of country we are leaving for the next generation,” he emphasized.

Mr. Mills’ comments add to growing public pressure on the government to crack down on illegal mining and enforce sustainable environmental practices.
