FIFA’s Chief Safety and Security Officer, G.B. Jones, has advised African football fans travelling to the 2026 World Cup to familiarise themselves with the list of prohibited items before heading to match venues.
Speaking in an interview shared on X by sports journalist Gary Al-Smith on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Jones stressed that while FIFA welcomes fan enthusiasm, certain items — including pyrotechnics, fireworks, and some musical instruments — will not be allowed inside stadiums in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“With respect to what to bring to the World Cup, we want you to bring your passion, but leave your pyro,” Jones said. “We don’t want fireworks, smoke, or pyrotechnics in the stadium. But we want to embrace the passion.”
He added that FIFA encourages fans to bring national flags, banners, and cultural items that help create the vibrant World Cup atmosphere.
Jones noted that safety preparations begin long before fans depart for the tournament.
“Please understand that our prohibited items include those listed on our website or on the ticket information. Know what you can and cannot bring to the stadium,” he advised.
Fans attending matches across the three host nations are expected to comply with these safety rules.
Although drums and some musical instruments are typically restricted, Jones explained that supporter groups may apply for special permission via FIFA’s official channels, subject to certain guidelines.
“We want to ensure you can bring the items that help you celebrate, but within the safety limits set for everyone,” he added.
