Ghana’s Black Stars secured a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Mali in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, strengthening their grip at the top of Group I.
The decisive moment came in the 49th minute when Alexander Djiku improvised brilliantly to convert a corner kick from Jordan Ayew, scoring what would ultimately be the match-winner.
Despite several opportunities to double their lead on the counterattack late in the match, the Black Stars were unable to capitalise, leaving the door slightly ajar for a Mali comeback.
The match was highly physical, with both sides struggling to string passes together for long stretches. Djiku’s goal shifted the momentum, prompting Mali to dominate possession while Ghana focused on protecting their slim lead.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was pivotal in the closing stages, making key saves from long-range efforts and dealing with threatening crosses as Mali pushed for an equaliser.
With this win and a previous 1-1 draw with Chad, Ghana now tops the group with 19 points and a +11 goal difference, three points ahead of second-placed Madagascar.
Mali remain fourth with 12 points, while Comoros climb to third with 15 points. Ghana will wrap up their Group I campaign on October 11, when they host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium in a potentially decisive clash.
